Garage Door Will Not Close
A door that starts down and reverses often points to photo-eye alignment, an obstruction, excess resistance, or incorrect opener limits. A crooked or binding door may have cable or track damage.
Jobs are served from our Santa Clara or Capitola shop. Santa Clara covers the South Bay, and Capitola covers Santa Cruz County.
Common Causes
- Blocked, dirty, or misaligned safety sensors
- Loose sensor wiring or failed photo eye
- Incorrect close-force or travel-limit setting
- Track obstruction, damaged roller, or bent track
- Cable tension problem causing uneven travel
- Panel or seal contacting the opening
Safe Checks
- Remove objects from the opening and the floor between both sensors.
- Wipe the sensor lenses with a soft dry cloth and check their indicator lights.
- Inspect the track for a visible obstruction without loosening hardware.
- Watch from a safe distance for one normal cycle and note where reversal begins.
Stop and call
When the Door Should Not Be Operated
Never bypass the safety sensors or repeatedly force the door closed. Keep people, pets, and vehicles clear. If the door is crooked, a cable is loose, or a roller has left the track, stop operating it.
What Affects Repair Cost
- Sensor alignment, wiring, or replacement needs
- Opener controls, travel settings, and compatible parts
- Track, roller, cable, or panel damage
- Time required to square and safely test the complete door

Questions About Garage Door Will Not Close
Straight answers about the symptom, safety, and repair options.
Why does the door close only when I hold the wall button?
That commonly indicates a photo-eye sensor problem. Check for an obstruction and clean both lenses. If the lights remain off or blinking, the sensors, alignment, or wiring may need service.
Can sunlight affect garage door sensors?
Direct sunlight can interfere with some photo eyes, but recurring reversal should still be diagnosed. Sensor position, alignment, wiring, and opener settings may also be involved.
What if the door is stuck open?
Keep the opening attended if possible and call for service. Do not bypass the safety system or force a crooked door. Same-day service may be available when the schedule allows.
